About Ophiuchus
This
picture is Johannes Kepler's drawing depicting the location of the
stella nova in the foot of Ophiuchus (wikipedia.com).
Ophiuchus is a large constellation located around the
celestial
equator, northwest of the center of the Milky Way. The southern part
lies between Scorpius to the west and Sagittarius to the east. Ophiuchus
is a rarely used astrological sign and is not included in
most versions of the zodiac. The sun passes through Ophiuchus from the
30 November to the 17 December.
The name ‘Ophiuchus’ is
Greek for ‘snake bearer’, and he was
formally referred to as Serpentarius. He is depicted as a man grasping
a snake. A 4th century astrologer seems to have associated 'the bright
star of Ophiuchus' with doctors, healers and physicians.
Ophiuchus
represents the healer, Asclepius. In Greek mythology,
Asclepius was the son of Apollo and he became so skilled at healing
with herbs that he was able to bring the dead back to life. Hades was
so angry at this that he convinced Zeus to kill Asclepius with a
lightning bolt. After his death, Asclepius was placed in the stars as a
constellation, known today as 'Ophiuchus'.
